Tetris Battle takes the classic game of Tetris and gives it a breath of new life, by adding multi player, 6 game modes, power ups and a host of cosmetic options. This game has seen tremendous growth since release, currently enjoying over 16,000,000 active monthly players. It is no wonder the game has grown mainly through word of mouth, when you make a great product, the players will notice.

The first game mode you will encounter is a simple head to head battle. Unless you directly challenge a friend, these games will be asynchronous. This means that while you are playing against a real human opponent, it is a previously recorded game. This does not make the game any easier, if your opponent cleared 4 rows during their match, you will see the same at the point in the game when it happened. The matchups happen extremely quickly and while the FAQ does state that you may encounter an AI opponent, this has not yet happened to me in over 50 games.
Opponents are matched using a clever ranking system. This allows for more even matches regardless of actual player level which is gained simply through the course of gaining XP by playing the game. Players can gain or lose stars based on the outcome of a match. By gaining enough stars, you will progress to the next skill level. If you lose too many games in a row, unless you bought the protective shield, you can also drop a level. The rank also comes into play in friend vs. friend challenges by starting the player with the higher rank with some filled lined, making the game more challenging and allowing for fun between two friends of varying skill.

Another interesting game mode is the 4 player sprint. Think of this game mode as a race of 40 paces, which is exactly how it will be represented on the game screen. Players race to be the first to complete 40 lines with no regard for completing multiple lines at a time, although doing so will slightly increase your pace. The game continues until all players have completed 40 lined or have been knocked out at which point, prizes are awarded based on your position.
The last game mode is the 6 player battle, which is similar to the 2 player mode except a moving target will denote which player receives the garbage blocks created from completing multiple lines at a time. At the end of the match, winners will be determined based on lines sent to other players and KO’s received, with KO’s being much more valuable. This mode is available in the new Arena mode which can be accessed with a password available on the Tetris Battle Twitter feed.

Each of these modes unlocks at specific levels. In addition, gaining levels will also unlock certain power ups such as the ability to see more upcoming blocks or faster drop speed. Once you gain the necessary level you will be able to immediately play the new game mode. Power ups will require spending Tetris coins, however if you enjoy the game, you can always spend some real money on Tetris cash and use it to unlock power ups early.
Tetris Battle is much more than just a multi-player version of Tetris, it is a full featured suite of games complete with leader boards and a thriving community. The game is very easy to pick up and will quickly provide you with an appropriate level of challenge regardless of your skill, or in the case of this writer, lack thereof. If you have ever in your life enjoyed Tetris, or just thought it would be fun to try, Tetris Battle is sure to bring you many months of entertainment.
