Monster World is a zany take on the poplar farming genre tens of millions of us have grown addicted to. Instead of growing corn and milking cows, in this game, players grow wacky plants such as the Lemonade Bush and create candy to feed a ping pong playing robot. Everything about Monster World is both instantly recognizable, yet fresh and new at the same time, making this a great game to remind us about all the reasons we enjoyed farming games in the first place.

The basic premise is simple. Grow crops to sell for cash and earn experience. Gain levels to increase the size of your farm. Decorate your farm to increase the happiness of your workers. Gaining levels opens new and ever weirder plants and new decorations, and making your workers happy allows them to tend to larger farms. This basic farming loop is pretty straightforward and yet, extremely addictive. There is something enormously satisfactory about harvesting a crop of cappuccino flowers that you usually do not experience harvesting grain.
One simplification to the farming theme is that instead of requiring seeds, the same flower you just picked can be replanted which will produce two or three copies when harvested. This means, as long as you do not sell all of your stock back to the store, you will always have something to plant. As a matter of fact when playing, we found we never had to visit the store except to buy our very first flower of each type, when it wasn’t given to us as a reward for leveling. Unless you really need the money right away, it is a good idea to keep a good stock of each flower.

Once you have enough flowers on hand to replant whatever you may need, there are three places to sell your goods for cash. The store will give you exactly half the sale price when purchasing flowers. Robert the robot will stop by often, asking for specific flowers. Robert also pays cash, however Robert will not only give you a better deal than the store, he will also award you with experience and sometimes Woogoo which is used to make candy. Making candy is by far the most profitable way to use your harvest. Combine Woogoo and certain flowers to make whatever candy Roberta the robot is craving and receive rewards of large sums of cash and experience.

The building mechanic was familiar yet with an added twist that is much appreciated. When you want to build one of the main structures required in the game you can do it in three ways. Two of them will be very familiar, by asking friends for parts or by spending Facebook credits. The other way is simply by playing the game. Each type of plant has a chance of producing specific building parts, so if for example you are missing Croco-Tooth nails, you should plant Candycane trees, Cappuccino Flowers or Cloud trees, each of these could produce a Croco-Tooth nail in addition to duplicating itself when it matures. The chance at little rewards made gathering a little more exciting.
Monster World has all of the social features you love about Facebook games. You may visit your friends farm to help them out, gain a few rewards for yourself and see what they have designed with the over 200 different types of items from the decoration shop. These items range from signs welcoming your friends to garden statues and of course country flags. The variety allows for limitless opportunities to show off your creativity.
If you enjoy farming games, Monster World is worth checking out. Its blend of familiar with scenery you are unlikely to see in any other game will allow you to enjoy this genre all over again. In a world where games are becoming more realistic, unless you actually want to milk a real goat, you will appreciate this light take on owning a monster farm.
