Miscrits of Sunfall Kingdom, and its popular expansion Miscrits of Volcano Island is the most popular creature collection games on Facebook. Calling it just another creature collector however is akin to calling a T-Rex just another large lizard. The collection part of the game is just the beginning. Not only will players be treated to an RPG with a compelling story of which they are the hero but strategy fans will find the gameplay both challenging and appealing.
Current players of Volcano Island can begin their adventure with their existing avatar, however new players just starting out will not find themselves at a disadvantage. The tutorial will guide new players through the town and their first battle. After that it is up to the player to talk to the town residents and progress through the story at their own pace. You may choose the slow and steady approach by staying in the lower level areas, training your creatures, referred to as Miscrits, slowly, or take more risks and venture further for the possibility of faster XP and a chance at finding a creature you may not already have in your collection.
The battle system of Miscrits of Sunfall Kindom seems very simple at first glance. Your initial Miscrit comes with just 2 abilities, a simple elemental attack and a personal enchantment which raises the creatures attack power. As this creature gains levels, new abilities will become available. Each creature comes with its own unique combination of abilities ranging from physical attacks, to debuffs and even special attacks such as poison or the ability to confuse your foes and make them attack themselves.
Having high level Miscrits will only get you so far. While you may be able to easily win battles against other Miscrits you find in the world, progression through the story requires beating much more powerful foes. This is where the strategy part of the game really shines. As just one example, I was able to beat the first few guardians quickly by sacrificing the first 2 Miscrits in my lineup, having them do nothing but reduce the defenses of my opponent as they themselves took damage. My third Miscrit was then able to win the battle in just 2 extremely powerful hits.
Some of the best rewards are won in player vs player battles. These encounters require a completely new set of strategy. The over 100 available Miscrits get their powers from one of 6 forces, water, fire, nature, wind, earth and lighting. Each has a strength and a weakness. For example, fire is strong against nature but weak against water. Using the correct Miscrit and ability against your opponent is vital to your success on the battlefield. Sometimes, just using the confusion power is your only hope of victory, at other times you may need to use the correct elemental power, knowing you will hit for critical damage.
If choosing which Miscrit and correct ability to use wasn’t enough, players can also choose one out of two feats every 10 levels. In addition the Miscrit can equip relics that may be used to either overcome an inherent weakness or enhance a strength. You can also enchant abilities to make them stronger, although at first you won’t have enough coins to enchant every Miscrit unless you spend Facebook credits to buy coins, which is always recommended if you enjoy the game and would like to support the developer. Lastly you can buy or find potions that can be activated during combat.
Creature collecting isn’t the only thing to do this game. There are over 170 Feats to complete. Some can be as simple as visiting a specific building while others will take more time to complete such as beating one of the guardians or winning a certain number of battles against other players.
If you are looking for a real RPG on Facebook and love collecting creatures (who doesn’t?) this is a game that will keep you entertained for many hours.
One of the things we love collecting here at AppSauna is answers to elusive questions. Luckily the good folks at Broken Bulb Game Studios have agreed to help us out in this quest.
AppSauna: I LOVE your Reset Account option! One of my biggest gripes and the topic of an upcoming feature is the inability to reset your account in so many Facebook games. THANK YOU, but can you tell us where this inspiration came from?
The ability to reset your account was a feature in our first ever Facebook game, Ninja Warz. We realized that players wanted to try a different experience instead of being trapped. Ninja Warz has 3 “class” options that helped drive that decision. We’ve made it available in all future releases for players who want to start over or have a new experience, and people seem to enjoy that freedom.
AppSauna: With many other creature collectors on Facebook it seems like both Miscrit of Sunfall Kingdom and Volcano Island almost added too much, not only do you have a full blown RPG but the variety of monsters is insane. Even the 4 evolutions for each Miscrit meant you had to have over 400 pieces of art. What inspired you to make something this difficult as opposed to taking an easier road and adding only some of these features?
Definitely a daunting task at times! While the quantity of art may seem overwhelming, we work hard to be as efficient with our art team as possible and design things in a way that will minimize the strain. We want to be authentic to the genre, not short cut at the expense of our players. Evolutions, for example, are one of the most popular components in our game, and help drive our monetization strategies. We didn’t want to venture into the creature collector genre without featuring some of the most important and exciting aspects. The level of loyalty and love from our player community seems to validate that choice!
AppSauna: Do you ever plan to allow players to bring their Miscrits from Volcano Island into Sunfall Kingdom?
This is something we’ve discussed making available in the future, but we have no set plans/timetable as of now. We wanted to allow players to have different experiences in each battle arena and environment so we’ve kept them separate.
AppSauna: The variety of Miscrits in both Sunfall Kingdom and Volcano Island is incredible; however they all seem to follow a particular art style. Is there a particular culture where you get your inspiration for these creatures?
As we were developing Miscrits, we wanted to find an art style we felt our players would connect with. Our team of artists worked on a number of designs and art styles, and eventually we settled on what you see in the game. Our artists found inspiration from numerous places, and we pulled those styles into the context of who our target players were, the Facebook platform in general, and the type of engagement and excitement we hoped to develop in the game.
AppSauna: Do you plan to release season and holiday specific rare Miscrits?
Absolutely! We’ve found that players love the novelty and fun of holiday and seasonal Miscrits and we want players to look forward to those special times of year in the game.
AppSauna: Can you reveal what is currently on the drawing board for Sunfall Kingdom; More Miscrits, more abilities, or more areas to explore?
We’re always working on ways to improve the experience and add new content to the Miscrits world. Our main focus following the launch of Volcano Island will be to release a number of new Miscrits each week, as well as the Temple, Monk’s Mountain, and future explorable lands filled with new Miscrits to capture. We want both sides of the Miscrits world (Sunfall Kingdom and Volcano Island) to be full and engaging games, packed with great content. As the new lands are released, look for more and more of the story to be revealed as players work towards end game content.
AppSauna: While you may not be able to give specifics, can you tell if a second expansion is being considered in the future, even if it is a distant future?
Our focus right now is in the development and growth of Volcano Island, to compliment the already popular Sunfall Kingdom. As Volcano Island grows, look for more end game content and experiences that help develop the story of your adventurer!
